Barn Conversion, Hertfordshire
The barn conversion was carried out for the celebrity Kim Wilde.
The original barn was C16 and was in poor condition with the frames racked over at an angle as shown in the photographs. The barn was stripped back to the bare frame and squared up before being reassembled using as much of the original structure as possible.
The David French Partnership’s philosophy with historic buildings is to try to make as much of the structure work as originally intended as possible. In this case the only point that could not be justified from the original frame was the longitudinal bracing and to overcome this, DFP came up with an innovative solution using stainless steel cable bracing which allowed for the bracing to be easily tightened as the oak frame dried out and moved.
